65 over 65 - Joanne Ottman

Congratulations to Joanne Ottman, one of the distinguished honorees that will be recognized throughout the year culminating in a state-wide celebration at CLN's 65th Jubilee Luncheon to be held on June 1, 2018.

Pearl of Wisdom

"Nursing is an art as well as a science - it is just as important to have "high touch" as "high tech" knowledge."

About the Honoree

Joanne has made an enormous contribution to nursing in Connecticut, especially within the Waterbury community as evident by her tenure at St. Mary's Hospital, UCONN Medical Center and her role as educator and Director of the Nursing Program at Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC).

She has always been committed to preparing well-rounded nursing graduates and created a dynamic educational experience for her students via active and diverse learning experiences inside and outside of the classroom. As one student stated, "She is the epitome of nursing. Serious, but kind. Bright, but humble. You feel calmer in her presence. Great teacher. Great person."

As a nursing leader, one of her greatest contributions occurred as Director of Allied Health & Nursing at NVCC by utilizing her excellent organizational and leadership skills to guide a transformation of the nursing program in the mid 2000's. She participated in the development and actualization of the CT Community College Nursing Program transforming (5) separate nursing programs into a statewide entity. On the NVCC campus, a major renovation of the labs, including a simulation room, allowed for increased student enrollment and graduation success. During this time, the NLN Accrediting Commission granted a full 8-year reaccreditation to NVCC due to Joanne's exceptional understanding of curriculum and the ability to effectively guide faculty ...quite a legacy!

Joanne graduated from Boston College in 1970, the same year she secured her initial RN license! Her many accomplishments include serving as a Navy nurse; the many years she spent working toward the goal of healthy moms and healthy babies in numerous settings, including a CNS at St. Mary's Obstetrical Care Unit; and as a staff nurse at UCONN Medical Center.

Congratulations Joanne, we applaud all that you do for nursing in Connecticut!
