About the Honoree
Leo is a retired Army Nurse Corps (ANC) officer, received his anesthesia education at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1967, and later served tours of duty in Vietnam, Europe and various U.S. military posts. Since 1990 he has practiced in Connecticut, and retired in 2012 as a staff anesthetist at Griffin Hospital in Derby, CT.
He has held a variety of positions in both the military and civilian sectors. These include clinical, administrative and academic positions in hospitals ranging from rural community facilities to level-one trauma centers. He has been an independent anesthesia provider; consultant; instructor in both clinical and didactic settings; director of two nurse anesthesia educational programs; and a staff member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).
Leo has served on two anesthesia journal editorial boards, published in various journals, textbooks and trade publications, and has been involved in clinical research. He has served as a committee member or officer in numerous local, state and national professional organizations, including positions as AANA Regional Director, AANA national Vice-President and, currently, is a member of the AANA foundation Board of Trustees and the editorial review board of the AANA Journal.
On the state level, Leo has served as Vice-President of the CT Association of Nurse Anesthetist (CANA) and on committees of both CANA and the CT Chapter of the American Association of Nurse Attorneys (CT-AANA). His service to the Connecticut Nurses' Association (CNA) has included more than 15 years as a member of the Government Relations Committee (GRC), member and chair of the CT Nurses Political Action Committee (CN-PAC), and service on Convention Planning and other committees. He has been a CNA Diamond Jubilarian and was nominated for the American Nurses Association (ANA) 2010 Luther Christman Award. Leo has been an ANA member since 1965!
He obtained his Diploma in Nursing from Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing (Manchester, NH)in 1965, his Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from St. Anselm College in 1972, his M.Ed. Degree from Boston University in 1973, and his Juris Doctorate from Seattle University in 1987.
In addition, Leo is co-owner of LeBel Consulting LLC with his wife, Theresa, who is also an RN and a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator.
