About the Honoree
Mentorship has been Mary's passion for over 50 years, encouraging new and seasoned faculty to excel in the role of educator! Mary serves as Clinical Chair and Professor Emeritus at Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC). She motivates and encourages personal and professional growth in students and is respected by faculty and students for her depth of knowledge, clinical competence, leadership ability,critical thinking skills and a caring attitude.
Mary was a nurse faculty first at Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing and then Naugatuck Valley Community College (formerly Mattatuck Community College). Her areas of expertise include Critical Care, Oncology and Rehabilitation Nursing.
A focus of Mary's work has been on curriculum development. In 1973 she was one of the original faculty members at Mattatuck Community College in Waterbury who developed the second-year nursing curriculum. She, together with a colleague, incorporated the use of interactive computer technology into the nursing courses to enhance student learning. Mary served 12 years as Chair of the Curriculum Committee at NVCC; was a member of the CT Community Colleges Steering Committee which developed the nursing curriculum currently utilized by the six ADN programs in CT; and from 1975-2008 she played a major role in preparing and writing the State Board of Nurse Examiners and the National League for Nursing accreditation reports. She was also co-author of a pre-test for students preparing for the Practical Nurse Licensure Exam.
Mary has been involved with various leadership activities over the years: Elected member of the Advisory Committee which reorganized the existing college committee structure; Chair of the Promotion Committee; Chair of the Sabbatical Leave and Professional Development Committee; Chair of the Tenure Committee; Member of the Student Academic Appeals Committee for 15 years; and received the Waterbury CT Chamber of Commerce Women in Leadership Award.
Mary earned her Diploma from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Waterbury, a BS from Boston College; an M.Ed. from the University of Hartford; an MSN from Southern CT State University, and was a CCRN for 12 years.
